The Roman god Janus was represented with two visages, one facing backward to reflect upon the past year, one facing forward to greet the new. Nothing like a little divine aid to start the year off right! Two heads, or at least eyes in the back of one, would certainly be helpful, especially when trying to juggle balls of yarn around small children or pets. The New Year brings with it a sense of celebration and freshness, whether we long for the year to come, or are just glad to have the old one behind us.
The world of high fashion has two new years: Spring Collection and Fall Collection. The rest of us make one set of resolutions; fashion has to reinvent itself twice a year to survive, but if the collections don’t make it all worthwhile, the parties will.
In honor of the magnificent year that is 2008, your Fashion Correspondent’s home-base, Knittique, has reimagined itself, and the launch of a smashing new website marks just how far Knittique has come. From its modest origins as a one-woman operation on a market cart (little-known history), to a West Coast-based retail and wholesale operation launching its own yarns, Knittique has continually risen to the challenge of linking everyday wear and high art, exalting the handmade, while never losing sight of the simple fun of a favorite project. Hence the presence of your beloved FC: Yours Truly only writes for the best.
The legendary Lindy of Knittique has always encouraged her fellow knitters to see their creations as personal fashion, be it ne’er so humble as a simple scarf; bringing our individuality to our work gives meaning to every stitch. The link between clothing and fashion, between living a resolution at New Year and living it all year, is dreaming. Twice a year, the fashion world takes mere clothing and transforms it into inspiration and fantasy – let’s do the same with our knits!
Dream big.
